0011 Anak-anak Abdul Muttalib bin Hasyim

Al-Harith bin Abdul Muttalib

Az-Zubair bin Abdul Muttalib

Baidha' binti Abdul Muttalib

Safiyyah binti Abdul Muttalib

Umaimah binti Abdul Muttalib

Atikah binti Abdul Muttalib

Birrah binti Abdul Muttalib

Urwah binti Abdul Muttalib

0011 Abdul Muttalib bin Hasyim’s children

According to a confirmed source of history, many Quraisy dignitaries were polygamists.  Abdul Muttalib himself had a few wives, with whom he had 16 children - 10 boys and 6 girls.

His sons were named
al-Harith, as-Zubair, Dhirar, Muqawwim, Abdul Manaf (Abu Talib), Abdul Uzza (Abu Lahab), Abbas, Hamzah, Abdullah and another whose name was not known, but would most probably be Abbad.

While his daughter’s names were Baidha', Umaimah, Urwah, Atikah, Birrah, and Safiyyah.  All of his daughters became wives to well

-known Quraisy dignitaries.

We will talk about Abdul Muttalib’s lesser-known children below.

Al-Harith bin Abdul Muttalib
Abdul Muttalib’s first-born.  It is customary for the Arabs to call fathers based on his first-born.  Thus Abdul Muttalib was known as ‘Abu al-Harith’ which means ‘father of Harith’.

Al-Harith helped his father dig the Zam-zam well, at that time when he was Abdul Muttalib’s only son.

Al-Harith had a few children, one of whom was a famous al-Mughirah named Abu Sufyan, his second son was named Naufal and the third was Abdullah.

Az-Zubair bin Abdul Muttalib

He was the second child, a strong and brave man that he was appointed as a Warlord, to lead the Bani Hasyim in the Fijar war which was a war of the Quraisy against the Hawazin.  Our prophet Muhammad pbuh was one participant of this war and he played the role as an arrow collector. The author will talk more about the Fijar war in another entry.

Baidha' binti Abdul Muttalib

Baidha’ was the grandmother of Sayyidina Uthman bin Affan on his mother’s side.  Her husband was Kuraiz bin Rabiah bin Abd Syams bin Abd Manaf.

Safiyyah binti Abdul Muttalib

Safiyyah shared the same parents as Hamzah (a famous uncle of the prophet).  Their mother was Halah binti Uhaib bin Abdul Manaf bin Zuhrah bin Kilab.  Her husband Harith bin Harb nin Umayyah, was the cousin of Abu Sufyan bin Harb.  Her husband died before even seeing their first-born.

She later married Al-Awwam bin Khuwailid, a cousin of Siti Khadijah binti Khuwailid (the prophet’s first wife).
They were blessed with 2 children namely Az-Zubair and As-Saib.

Safiyyah was one of the earliest person to embrace Islam, along with her son, Az-Zubair.
What happened to Al-Awwam was not known but it was thought that he had already died at the time.

Safiyyah also experienced the suffering of the Hasyim clan when they were boycotted by the Quraisy in the Syiib Abu Talib village for 2 and a half years, starting from the seventh year of Muhammad’s prophethood to the 10
th.  She then moved to Madinah when the prophet permitted the Muslims to emigrate.  The journey to Madinah was not an easy one; they had to overcome many obstacles along the way, such as crossing cliffs, the hot and vast deserts and the lengthy distance.

Safiyyah was a courageous woman.
This was evident during the Uhud war, where her brother Hamzah was killed.  The prophet Muhammad pbuh asked Az-Zubair to stop his mother from running to Hamzah’s lifeless body, because he was worried that she couldn’t control her emotions.  But, strong as she was, she watched his body with a steely heart and didn’t wail.

She also once killed a Jewish soldier who attempted to enter the Muslim’s fortress in the Khandak war.

Safiyyah was moreover a great poet.
She composed a few poems before the prophet’s death.

Umaimah binti Abdul Muttalib

Wife to Abu Waqqas bin Uhaib, a politician and a great warrior.  She was the mother of Saad bin Abu Waqqas, a companion of the prophet Muhammad pbuh, one of the 10 companions who were promised paradise.

Hamzah bin Abdul Muttalib was the nephew of Abu Waqqas, thus Hamzah was a cousin to Saad.  On another note, Abdul Muttalib’s youngest wife – Halah binti Uhaib was the mother of Hamzah bin Abdul Muttalib.

Halah was also a cousin of Abu Waqqas.

Atikah binti Abdul Muttalib

Atikah was married to Abu Umayyah bin al-Mughirah al-Makhzumi.  She was cousins with Al-Walid bin Al-Mughirah and Hisyam bin Al-Mughirah.  Atikah was the mother of Ummu Salamah, a wife of the prophet.  Her daughter, Ummu Salamah was cousins with Khalid bin Al-Walid and Abu Jahal.

Birrah binti Abdul Muttalib
Birrah was married twice, once to Jahsy bin Ri’ab bin Ya’mar bin Syabrah bin Murrah bin Kabir bin Ghanam bin Dudan bin Asad.  She bore Abdullah bin Jahsy, Sayyidatina Zainab bin Jahsy and Hamnah binti Jahsy (Hannah would marry Mus’ab bin Umair, who became a martyr in the Uhud war) with this husband.

Her next marriage was to Abdul Asad bin Hilal bin Abdullah bin Umar bin Makhzum.  She had Abu Salamah bin Abdul Asad with this husband.  Abu Salamah was a cousin of Abu Umayyah bin al-Mughirah.  Abu Umayyah was the father of Ummu Salamah (mentioned previously, a daughter of Atikah binti Abdul Muttalib’s).  Abu Salamah was also cousins with al-Walid bin al-Mughirah who is the father of Khalid bin al-Walid, a very much admired warrior.

It could not be determined to whom was she married to first.

Urwah binti Abdul Muttalib.

Married to Umair bin Wahab who was a dignitary and a ruthless Quraisy
musyrikin (unbeliever).  She was mother to Wahab and Kulaib (Tulaib) bin Umair .
These are some of the facts about Abdul Muttalib’s children as recorded in Islamic historical books and documents.
