Setelah Hasyim bin Abdul Manaf meninggal.
Al-Muttalib menjawab:
"Dialah Anak Saudara ku Syaibah"
begitulah secebis kisah Abdul Muttalib.
English Version
0010 Hasyim bin Abdul Manaf and his son Syaibah
We proceed now to the story
about Abdul Muttalib, son of Hashim and grandfather to the prophet Muhammad
pbuh. This will be discussed in length
since his story is filled with trials and tribulations.
Abdul Mutallib is the son of Hashim bin Abdul Manaf and Salma bin Amru an-Najjariyyah, a young widow from the Najjar’s Khazraj clan in Madinah. The same clan as Anas bin Malik, a servant and great friend to the prophet Muhammad.
How they met
Hasyim bin Abdul Manaf frequently travelled from Mekah to Syam due to the nature of his business. Generally traders from Mekah would stop by Yathrib (Madinah) on their way to Syam, to rest and at the same time, trade. They would usually travel to Syam during the warm season and to Yaman during the cold. This fact was also stated in the Quran, from the verse al-Quraisy.
One day when he was in Yathrib, Hashim saw Salma at a restaurant. At the time Salma was already a widow. She was a well-known beauty with a great personality to match, hence a very sought-after woman. However, Salma conditioned that her husband would be a man willing to sacrifice everything to Allah and that she should not be controlled by her husband in her marriage. This of course deterred her suitors.
Nevertheless, this attracted Hasyim even more, as he thought that Salma’s witty conditions meant that she was smart and therefore if they were to be married, they would have children as clever as their mother. He accepted her conditions and brought his newly-wedded-wife to Mekah.
Their union was blessed with children, one of whom was named Syaibah (which meant ‘the grey-haired’, due to the few strands of grey-hair on his head). This child would later be known as Abdul Muttalib.
Because of this writer’s lack
of resources, the writer couldn’t determine the names of all of the siblings to
Abdul Muttalib or Syaibah. One sibling
mentioned in the writer’s resources was Asad bin Hasyim, father of Fatimah who was
the wife of Abu Talib and mother to Ali.
Now back to Abdul Muttalib’s story.
After Hasyim bin Abdul Manaf’s death, his cousin,
al-Muttalib brought Syaibah back to Mekah.
Upon their arrival, many asked al-Muttalib about the child.
“Who is that child behind you?”
“Who is that child behind you?”
They asked, while pointing to the child sitting behind him on the camel.
He answered, “He is my nephew, Syaibah.”
Yet they did not believe him and alleged that the child was a slave bought by al-Muttalib from the market in Yathrib. This was how the child became known as ‘Abdul Muttalib’ which means ‘Muttalib’s slave’.
