0013 The slaughter of Abdullah.
During the ‘Days of
Ignorance’ (jahiliyyah) of the Arab
community, being blessed with many children was a source of pride. Even prouder would they be, if they had many
sons. This was due to the fact that they
were so keen on having wars. They, in
turn would be ashamed if they had many daughters since daughters were seen as a
burden, especially during wartime. Thus
some of them took the extra length and buried their daughters alive.
Abdul Muttalib, on the other hand, loved is children dearly. He had a big heart and was sincere and not swayed by the jahiliyyah Arabs’ culture during the time.
Since he really desired a son, he vowed to Allah that if he was given 10 sons, he would slaughter one of them as a sacrifice to the idols that were worshipped by the jahiliyyah Arabs. Vows such as these were unheard of in the community at the time.
His prayers were answered and after 10 years he was blessed with 10 sons, remembering his promise, he brought his 10 sons to the front of the Kaabah .

He placed his sons in front of 2 of the idols named Isaf and
Nailah. Also situated there was the
Zam-zam well. He decided that he would choose
the son by drawing a name out of a bowl.
When the Quraisy dignitaries learned about this, they flocked to the Kaabah to watch.
After 3 draws, it appeared that at all 3 times only Abdullah’s name was drawn. Abdul Mutallib was deeply saddened by this. Nevertheless, he had no choice and decided with distraught to sacrifice Abdullah, his favourite son.
Seeing that Abdul Muttalib was determined to proceed with
his plan, the dignitaries asked:
“O Abdul Muttalib, where are you taking this child?”
“I am going to sacrifice him to fulfil my vows to Allah,” came the answer.
“We can not let you do this, and we will find ways to prevent this from happening. By Allah, if you proceed with this, we are afraid that others will do the same, and more people would slaughter their sons as sacrifices.”

That was a strong argument by the dignitaries. They figured that since Abdul Muttalib was like them, a dignitary, he was also an authority figure and this act would indeed not be a good example to the society.
Then one of the dignitaries said to Abdul Muttalib:
“O Abdul Muttalib, do not
slaughter your son. We can find another
way to redeem your vows. We are willing
to give you our properties, no matter how much to compensate your vows.”
Since so many were against him, he now realized that he was wrong thus repented and decided not to proceed with his initial wishes.
