English Version
Qusai bin Kilab is prophet Muhammad's (pbuh)
fourth and most famous grandfather. His
real name is Amru though he was known more as Qusai. Likewise, his father's name is actually Hakim
but he was called Kilab (which means dog) for he was known to own hunting dogs.
Qusai bin Kilab was the first Quraishi
dignitary who held multiple important governmental positions in Mecca. He was an al-Hijabah when he was 50 years old;
the predecessor for that position was a Khuza'ah. The Khuza'ah's had seized that position from
the Jurhum's, Qusai's ancestors; a lineage of the prophet Ismail.
Kilab bin Murrah was blessed with 2
offsprings, Qusai and Zuhrah, from his marriage to Fatimah binti Saad bin
Sayal. Kilab died when Qusai was a baby.
Qusai’s mother, Fatimah later remarried,
this time to Rabiah bin Haram. They
moved to Syam after their wedding to start anew. Whilst there, they had another son named
Darraj.
Qusai, whose father passed away when he was
very young thought that Rabiah was his birthfather. However one day, he had an argument with his
half-brother, Darraj. Thinking that
Rabiah was his real father, he went to Rabiah to tell him about their
fight. This was witnessed by Rabiah bin
Haram’s relatives who knew that Qusai was only Rabiah’s stepson. So they said, “He should not tell on his
brother and ask for Rabiah bin Haram to defend him, because the old man he had
always thought as his father was really not his birthfather.”
Feeling insulted by that comment, Qusai
turned to his mother. His mother,
thinking that being truthful would be good, told him the truth.
She told Qusai that his birthfather ranked
higher in their society as compared to his stepfather, and that his real
relatives reside in Mecca. Fatimah
sensed that revealing this fact would probably cause her and Qusai to split
ways, but she had no choice but to tell him the truth, since intelligent Qusai
is getting smarter as days go by.
